Which International Real Estate tugs at your heart and pleases your pocket?
Are the green hills of Ireland your favorite international real estate? the beaches of Anguilla? the tall towers of Panama? the romance and mild climates of Southern Europe or the rain forests of Costa Rica? Location, Location Location. Important? Yes, But . . .
That's what may draw you at first, but wait, don't buy until you know more about the international real estate of that country, its tax and inheritance laws, economic history and how all of it effects you at home. Whether you are buying property abroad for a second home, a permanent move or an investment, these are the questions you need to answer. - Study the property market. Does property in the country in question expected to rise? What if you want to sell down the line? Will you make a profit? Or will you have to sell at a lost. The market in each country is different. You can't assume that a foreign country operates the same as your home country.
- When budgeting for a new life in a foreign country, take into account travel back and forth to you home country. Is it cost effective to have a summer home abroad? Or, if it's permanent move, will you easily be able to visit family in the country you left?
- Seek help from a lawyer or account in the country you're considering. Find out what the tax laws are in that country. Are there property taxes? If so, how much? How easy is it for a foreigner to buy land in that country?
- If you are buying property as an investment and intending to rent it out? Who will manage it? Finding an agent will be essential unless you are living nearby.
- Make sure you have a will or inheritance coverage in the country in question as well as your home country. You see how a good attorney will be necessary in both the foreign country and your own.
- Are there financing options available to purchase your international real estate. If so, what are they?
- Get documents translated if buying in a country with a language not your own.
